Annual or perennial herbs or shrublets. Leaves basal/radical and cauline, simple to pinnatisect, lower surface white tomentose. Capitula solitary or several in a corymbiform synflorescence, discoid. Involucre bowl-shaped, ovoid, campanulate, hemispheric or cylindric; phyllaries many, herbaceous or leathery, appressed or reflexed. Receptacle with broad rigid, shortly acuminate scales or bristles. Corolla red to purple, with sessile glands. Anther tails lacerate-caudate. Style branches short and divergent. Cypselae isodiametric, narrowly obovoid, narrowly ellipsoid or obconic, 3- or 4-angled, glabrous or glandular, sometimes spinulose-tuberculate, apical rim forming a crown. Pappus bristles in several rows, white scabrid, barbellate or plumose, unequal in lengths, sometimes 2-5 inner bristles much longer than others; bristles inserted on a conspicuous conical cupule, persistent or caducous as a whole.

Annual herb, erect, 30-150 cm tall, much branched distally, cottony or white tomentose, stem striated. Leaves basal/radical and cauline, mostly basal, exstipulate. Basal leaves: rosulate, 10-48 cm x 2.5-14 cm, obovate or oblong, sinuate-toothed or lyrate-pinnatifid, glabrous above, appressed white-tomentose or cottony below; petiole short. Cauline leaves: Few, sessile, usually smaller than basal leaves, lanceolate or oblanceolate. Capitula 1.6-2.5 cm long and 1.8-3.5 cm across, pale purple, discoid; on 3-14 cm long peduncle, combined into corymbose panicles or solitary axillary, peduncle white tomentose. Involucre broadly campanulate or hemispheric; phyllaries 3-5-seriate, tips rigid and sharp, lanceolate, acuminate, cottony pubescent, imbricate and spreading, reflexed in anthesis, deflexed in fruiting, tomentose without; outermost ca. 6 mm x 1.5 mm and innermost 1.9 cm x 2 mm. Receptacle epaleate, densely bristly. All florets discoid, 1.3-1.6 cm long, light purple. Corolla 1.3-1.5 cm long; tubes ca. 2 mm long, much shorter than tubular-funnelform throat, lobes 5, ca. 2 mm long, triangular- lanceolate. Anthers 4 mm long, appendage lanceolate, base calcarate, tails ca. 1 mm long. Ovary muricate.Cypselae ca. 3 mm long, oblong, 4-ribbed, cupular at apex, muricate, glabrous, dark brown. Pappus hairs 1.7-2 cm long, silky, connate at base, plumose, dirty-white.
